In a move that will surprise almost no one, Arsenal's newest defender gets a defender's number

As all of us at TSF expected, new Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista was granted the most defendery number still available. Arsenal, as is now the custom with its new jersey unveilings, announced the official numbering via its Instagram account earlier today.

Just before moving on loan to Villareal as a makeweight for the Gabriel transfer, the Costa Rican international signs up long term.

Lost in the anticipation and hullabaloo surrounding the transfer of Gabriel Paulista from Villareal to Arsenal this morning was a little note in the first paragraph of the story on the club's official site:

"Arsenal have signed Brazilian defender Gabriel from Villarreal, with Joel Campbell agreeing a new long-term deal prior to a loan move to the La Liga side."

The Costa Rican international, who's moved to Villareal on loan as part of the transfer deal with the La Liga side, has only made 10 appearances for Arsenal this season, mostly coming on as a late sub. He has not scored yet, so hopefully he can start to find his form in La Liga.

Of course, the new deal for Campbell does not necessarily mean that he's going to be a mainstay for the Gunners for the near future--if he does not stay in London, though, the deal will grant Arsenal some leverage for any future negotiations towards a more permanent move for Campbell, should things not pan out at Ashburton Grove.

#WelcomeGabriel

Arsenal have completed the signing of 24-year old centre back Gabriel Paulista on a long-term contract for an undisclosed price thought to be in the region of £13.4m. Gabriel was granted a work permit despite not being capped by Brazil, with Arsenal arguing that he is an "exceptional talent".

Gabriel joins from Villarreal, where he only joined in August 2013, playing a total of 50 times in two seasons. Before Villarreal, Gabriel played for Vitória in Brazil, where he was the Campeonato Bainao defender of the year in 2012 and 2013.

In Gabriel, who can play left back and right back, Arsene Wenger sees a defender who is quick and competitive, but is not a complete sure thing at the top level. In that sense, he is very similar to Laurent Koscielny, who also joined when he was 24 about to turn 25, and was relatively inexperienced at the top level, as well has being quick and strong but prone to some errors. He's become one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and while Gabriel is only expected to be backup right now, if he can emulate Koscielny, £13.4m will be a cheap price to pay.

He is also, as you can see, holding a Villarreal scarf that (presumably) is not his, because I seriously doubt he bought one just for this picture. This all means something.

What it means is that Campbell's loan to Villarreal is happening, and will likely be officially announced by Arsenal soon (which is to say, before March 1). But that loan is connected to the Gabriel Paulista transfer from Villarreal to Arsenal, which still has yet to be actually announced, but since a fee is agreed and the work permit is approved and the player wants to come, I'm not entirely sure what the hold-up is. Probably when Lukas Podolski left he took all the cameras with him, so they haven't been able to take his #WelcomeGabriel picture yet.

With all this on the table, though, at this point I'd be really surprised if this transfer blew up. It'd almost have to be an agent screw-up of some kind. I expect Gabriel soon.

The defender inches ever closer to Arsenal.

According to the Telegraph's Jeremy Wilson, the Home Office has approved a work permit for Villarreal's Gabriel Paulista ahead of a move to Arsenal, clearing one of the final hurdles needed to bring him to London. He is undergoing a medical exam today and, barring any unforeseen issues in that exam, should be an Arsenal player by the end of the day.

Arsene Wenger noted yesterday that the deal was close to being completed, but the work permit issue was still a concern. Gabriel didn't meet the automatic qualification of playing in 75% of Brazil's international fixtures in a two-year period -- he is uncapped -- but Arsenal were evidently able to argue successfully that Gabriel is a good player and would "contribute significantly to the development of the game at the top level in England."

SIDEBAR: There's an interesting note in there as well about work permit rules changing in summer, which would make it even harder to get players into the country. Evidently the appeals process Arsenal successfully completed is being eliminated, in favor of a £10 million exemption threshold. So we have more fee inflation to look forward to, it would appear.

The Arsenal manager is confident of securing the defender's services.

After defeating Brighton and Hove Albion in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger commented on the progression of Villarreal's Gabriel Paulista towards joining the team. Yesterday it was reported that a fee had been agreed between the two clubs, and Gabriel himself has noted in the past that he'd totally be down for a transfer, if anyone wants to make that happen. It's starting to look like it's all going to happen.

Villarreal have confirmed the arrival of Joel Campbell and the agreement of a fee with Arsenal for Gabriel

Villarreal have confirmed that an agreement has been made in principle with Arsenal for the transfer of 24-year old defender Gabriel Paulista. No fee has been announced by the most recent report, from Kike Marin, states that the deal would cost Arsenal €18m, or £13.5m.
At the time of writing, Arsenal have not confirmed the transfer, likely because it is subject to Internal clearance, which will mean the much discussed work permit.
The loan could spell the end of the Costa Rican's time at Arsenal

Joel Campbell's time at Arsenal appears set for a quick end, with reports coming out that the tricky winger will be used as makeshift to cover the difference in transfer fee and valuation for Arsenal's seemingly-upcoming deal for Villarreal's Gabriel:

Although the La Liga outfit held firm to the €20m release clause in the Brazilian’s contract, it’s believed that part of that sum will be made up by the loan of the Costa Rican striker until the end of this campaign.

There is no clause which allows them to buy at the end of the loan period, however, and it seems likely that Arsenal will look for a permanent suitor in the summer.

Campbell has barely sniffed the pitch this season, with Arsene Wenger preferring just about every available player on the flanks. With Theo Walcott back to health, and Wenger's comments yesterday indicating he's going to start Mesut Ozil wide, there's even fewer options for him at Arsenal. If he wasn't able to make the pitch when others were out hurt, there's very little to suggest he'd suddenly get opportunities now.

Hopefully Campbell thrives and makes an impact during the rest of Villarreal's season, and is able to latch on to a club full time next year that can guarantee him chances. If this is the last of Joel Campbell at Arsenal, we at The Short Fuse wish him all the luck in the world in his future opportunities.
