It's not the prolific indie-pop stylings of GBV, nor is it the snarling, old-school skate punk of GBH. It's The Short Fuse's post-game look at GBU - the good, the bad, and the ugly from yesterday's game.

If there's one thing I love, it's a hoary, over-used cliche. Actually, I hate those, but here's one anyway. Soccer is a game of two halves! The first half yesterday was Good Arsenal; they passed well, they scored (twice!), and they looked like they looked early in the season. Then, somebody apparently doped up the half time orange slices (cliche #2!). To the details!

THE GOOD: Lukas Podolski decided to be a good player again. We're not sure what the problem has been these last few games, but it's good to see him back in form. Kos also looked much better, and as mentioned the entire first half was a refreshing return to Arsenal-quality play. But then...

THE BAD: ...the second half started. This was Not Good Arsenal; they looked nervous, they couldn't string a move together at all, and they held on by their fingertips to a point that they would have been glad to get before kickoff, but a point that nonetheless felt like a letdown at the final whistle.

THE UGLY: Oh, Santi. I don't know if the pitch was slippery, although there were more than a few slips and falls, but yours to end the first half and allow the goal was the worst of the lot. It also seemed to do a number on your confidence, because your second half was...not pleasant. Theo's miss at the end, while not fully ugly, was at the very least "has a great personality".

Arsenal drop a two-goal cushion, but come away with a point at Schalke.

0-1 Theo Walcott 18'
0-2 Olivier Giroud 26'
1-2 Klaas-Jan Huntelaar 45+2'
2-2 Jefferson Farfan 67'

Arsenal were able to create a two goal lead in the first half, but a pair of mistakes allowed Schalke to come back and equalize, netting each team a point and keeping Arsenal one point behind the Germans.

The first fifteen minutes of the match went mostly Schalke's way, with Arsenal having issues maintaining possession and Schalke creating a few chances. In the 18th minute, though, an Arsenal aerial ball forward was poorly headed by a Schalke defender, and it fell directly into Olivier Giroud's path. He was tackled well in the box but again the ball fell Arsenal's way, and Theo Walcott was able to round the keeper and score.

Eight minutes later Arsenal were able to net another, as Lukas Podolski was able to carve out a niche on the left flank, just enough to cross the ball in front of goal. Giroud was charging in and blasted a header into the Schalke net, and Arsenal had a pair of goals to start on the road. Things looked good.

But when you're playing a remotely competent team - and Schalke are surely that and more - mistakes can cost you. In first half injury time Santi Cazorla had possession not far from the Arsenal box, and slipped. He wasn't the only player to slip for no apparent reason in the match, but his was the most costly. Lewis Holtby passed the ball in to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who scored just before the stroke of halftime to put Schalke back in the match.

Much of the second half consisted of Schalke pressure, and the one real chance Arsenal constructed fell apart via dubious means. Lukas Podolski was working Marco Höger on the flank, and Höger twisted his ankle and fell to the ground as Podolski beat him. Podolski continued to play - as is his right, particularly in such an attacking area - and nearly had a shot on goal, but the referee blew play dead. Presumably this was because he believed Höger had a head injury, which would have been perfectly legitimate, but he didn't, and there was no good reason for play to stop. Podolski was furious, and kicked the ball into the advertising boards at the endline, earning a booking. It was a poor reaction, but for a legitimate reason.

Soon after Schalke made Arsenal pay. A cross from the left flank found Farfan (inexplicably) totally alone, and as he cut in from his right flank the Arsenal defense swung in to cut him off. He shot, and Thomas Vermaelen's desperate lunge to clear the ball ended up directing the ball straight into the net. It was another error, and really this one was avoidable with better marking. Possibly it was his center back instincts pulling him "out" of position, but either was Farfan should not have had as much room to work as he did.

The rest of the game was, for the most part, dead, as Schalke didn't want to concede on the counterattack and Arsenal were unable to keep the ball long enough to build any kind of attack. There was one chance very late as another odd ball found its way over and through the Schalke defense, and Theo Walcott fought off a couple defenders to take a shot. Which he hit directly into Lars Unnerstall's feet.

So it's a draw, and before the game that wouldn't have been a bad result at all, but after taking a 2-0 lead it stings, a bit. Really if Arsenal take care of business and beat Montpellier (who have been eliminated already) and Olympiakos they should be fine, but this loss of two points here is a bit annoying. The overall performance was again a bit mediocre, and a few players (Cazorla, Wilshere) are starting to look tired. I try not to be That Guy, but Arsenal really need to get a win against Fulham this weekend to get things on the right track again.

The great thing about sports is also the horrifying thing about sports. Games come fast and furious. Didn't like the last game? Great! Forget it! Here's a fresh new game to get excited about! But then, ugh, new game not this again we saw this the other day please make it get better.

Anyway, putting all that angst aside, Arsenal are actually in decent shape in their Champions League group; six points from three games has them one point behind today's hosts, and three points ahead of Olympiacos. A point here would be great, three would be fantastic; any sort of result will see Arsenal in good shape to qualify with two games left in the group.

When pondering how to approach this match, I'm going with faith; I think Arsenal will get a result. Don't make me look stupid, Arsenal.

In the reverse fixture, Schalke came into the Emirates and laid a 2-0 pasting on a feckless Arsenal. Now the out-of-form Gunners have to travel to one of the most intimidating stadia in Europe to try to return the favor.

Schalke 04 vs. Arsenal
UCL Group B Round 4
Kickoff: Tuesday, November 6, 2:45 PM EDT
Veltins-Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Ruhr Valley, Germany
Form: Sch DWWWL | Ars LLWWL
TV: foxsoccer.tv (subscription required)

So much has happened since Schalke 04 came to the Emirates on Wednesday, October 24, and proceeded to play Arsenal out of the building on their way to a 2-0 win in Group B of the Champions League. Arsenal eked a victory against QPR and then lolled to a 7-5 triumph in Reading, before Manchester United put the brakes on all the fun. Schalke appeared to gain vigor from their away win in London, but they hit a bit of a rough patch themselves last weekend against sixth-from-bottom TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, losing 3-2. So both teams are looking for something to get themselves going again.

The squad situations for both sides haven't changed too much; in fact, Schalke could put out the exact same lineup they used last time against Arsenal; it seemed to work pretty well. Arsenal have had Jack Wilshere and Bacary Sagna return to the squad since the reverse fixture, and one should expect to see both of them tomorrow, especially given that Wilshere will be sitting out the next Premier League engagement due to his red card from Old Trafford. Andre Santos will start at left back, and Thomas Vermaelen will start alongside him at center-half; this was the weak spot against which Schalke pounded like so many German hammers two weeks ago. Expect that to be the prevailing tactic again, with Jefferson Farfan trying to get behind Santos to run onto through balls.

Arsenal will need to figure out a way to close things up, or it could be a long match. The question is whether they roll out Lukas Podolski again, a man who has looked completely lost at sea for a couple of weeks now. They don't have anyone else available who can play on the left aside from Santi Cazorla; could Wenger get radical and put Cazorla on the left, moving Arteta up and putting Francis Coquelin alongside Jack Wilshere, perhaps?

Or will it be the standard projected lineup:

Mannone
Sagna - Mertesacker - Vermaelen - Santos
Wilshere - Arteta
Cazorla
Walcott - Giroud - Podolski

Remains to be seen.

Match prediction: Terror. Panic. Death. Life. Schalke's supporters scare the crud out of everyone; Arsenal lose 3-1, and only three days later is Carl Jenkinson found living in a shanty on the banks of the Ruhr, muttering something to himself about Richard Burton and carrots while warming his hands over a burning trash barrel in a drizzle.

One of the most stunning arenas in Europe hosts Arsenal tomorrow, as the Gunners look to recover their high-scoring form as they visit FC Schalke 04 tomorrow night in the UEFA Champions League

The amount of modern, sleek stadia across Germany is breathtaking. Many football clubs in the country play in some of the most innovative and imposing structures in the world. If one were to simply look at the Allianz Arena, or the Commerzbank-Arena or Westfalenstadion, one would easily understand why Germany is consistently viewed as one of the best places to host international tournaments and club competition finals. And there might not be a stadium that is more amazing in the country that can lay host to such events as described above than FC Schalke 04's Veltins-Arena, located in the Ruhr Valley city of Gelsenkirchen.

History: FC Schalke formed as a club by a group of high school students in a local Schalke pub, in the year 1904, as "Sportclub Westfalia 1904 Schalke" (hence, the "04" designation in their current official name). Although they successfully formed, they had trouble gaining admittance into the prominent football association in Germany at the time. In order to fulfill their ambitions, they merged with a gymnastic club "Turnverein 1877 Schalke." The two athletic clubs separated, then joined back up, before finally separating in 1924 with the football club officially taking on the name "FC Schalke 04" and switching their club colors to the blue and white that we all know well today. Four years after the club separated for good from the gymnastic club, they moved into the Glückauf-Kampfbahn, a multi-use stadium that was home to the club until August 1973. Unlike most stadiums that have been vacated by their clubs, the Glückauf-Kampfbahn is still standing and is currently being used by football club DJK Teutonia Schalke-Nord.

The club moved into Parkstadion, which more than doubled their capacity from Glückauf-Kampfbahn, at the beginning of the 1973-74 season. But it wasn't long, in stadium years, before plans were hatched by the club to move out of Parkstadion, as it was considered outdated by current standards, but also because there was the possibility that Germany was going to win the rights to host the 2006 World Cup and club and city officials didn't want to miss the windfall that comes with being a host in such an event. In 1997, club officials officially announced the project to build a modern stadium just to the immediate south of Parkstadion, capable of hosting some of the biggest events in the country and world.
