After taking a flying tackle from San Marino's goalkeeper on Friday, Theo Walcott should only miss two weeks with a bruised lung.

In the course of one of the most pointless World Cup qualifiers in the history of the World Cup and the word "qualifier," England and Arsenal winger/forward/whatever Theo Walcott chased a bounding ball forward into the San Marino box and took an inexplicable flying hipcheck from the goalkeeper. He went down, left the game, and ended up in the hospital.

Now, according to the Mirror and John Cross, Walcott has been released from the hospital (good news) but has a bruised lung (bad news). But evidently it's not that badly bruised, because he's only going to miss two weeks or so (good news).

Walcott said that he felt like he'd been "hit by a bus" according to Cross, which is understandable, because that was a pretty violent collision. Honestly I'm a bit surprised that he's only going to miss the two weeks mentioned, because it looked initially like a pretty painful collision. But I'm glad that the massive freakout that I saw on Twitter and other zones of the football Internet on Friday is (once again) looking like just a silly overreaction.

Of course now that I say that, he'll probably have to have a leg transplant or something. So it goes.

In not-surprising news, Theo Walcott will miss England's match with Poland on Tuesday. No return date has been set.

According to the BBC, Arsenal inside forward Theo Walcott will miss Tuesday's England versus Poland clash due to the chest injury he sustained when the San Marino goalkeeper mistook himself for a scrumhalf in a World Cup qualifier yesterday. There is still no official diagnosis, nor is there word about any possible return date for Walcott to the Arsenal squad.

England manager Roy Hodgson was none too pleased with the challenge yesterday:

"If I described the challenge as reckless I would be being kind. It was a very fierce challenge," said England manager Roy Hodgson.

He added: "I don't believe there was any malice. But it put a dampener on the evening."

Walcott will return to Arsenal for further treatment, which hopefully will consist of watching old She-Ra, Transformers, and Batman Beyond episodes on the ol' internet and eating a good deal of healthy ice cream, potato chips, and root beer.

The winger's chest injury will keep him in the hospital for a little while, suggesting that it's more than just a bruise.

Well, the news on Theo Walcott doesn't sound too good right now from an Arsenal or England perspective. After he got clattered by San Marino's goalkeeper five minutes into today's World Cup qualifier, the Arsenal man had to be taken to the hospital for examinations of his injured chest. Now it looks as if he's going to be there for a while:

Sam Wallace of The Independent points out that Roy Hodgson is pretty concerned:

There is still no diagnosis about the injury, but staying overnight at a hospital for a chest injury suggests that Walcott sustained possible broken bones, and broken bones around the chest area could present a number of issues.

Stay tuned; we will have more news for everyone as it becomes available.

Walcott injures chest under challenge from San Marino goalkeeper.

According to ESPN, Theo Walcott has sustained a chest injury sustained after the San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini tackled the winger, hard, after Walcott had lifted the ball over him:

The exact nature isn't clear and hasn't been diagnosed yet, so whether it's just bruising, broken ribs, or maybe just really bad heartburn from some particularly fresh gyros is not yet known. Hopefully nothing is broken and Walcott will be able to return to action soon, just like Laurent Koscielny. [Ed. note: please, please, take it easy with our freshly injured players, though, England, and France, and every other nation. Thank you.] In the meantime, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will probably be spelling Gervinho on the right side of Arsenal's attack, as Theo makes about the thirtieth Arsenal player to sustain an injury playing in a nineteenth-century geopolitical history lesson.

Yay.
