Now that Arsenal captured the signing of Granit Xhaka, they might be feeling a bit embolden to continue their Swiss connections. This time, the rumor, via Kicker in Germany, involves Xhaka's national teammate, Wolfsburg's left back Ricardo Rodriguez that they say could be had for as little as £19 million.
This makes more sense than it doesn't based on the fact that Arsene Wenger's preferred starter at left back, Nacho Monreal, will be 31 at the end of next season, and the future of Kieran Gibbs looks to be away from the club. While there are obvious needs for upgrades at other positions, Arsene Wenger will need to address this position's long-term outlook sooner than later.
Rodriguez is highly regarded as one of the best young left backs in Europe, known for his attacking prowess. Wolfsburg suffered a down season this last campaign, finishing a distant 8th place in Bundesliga after qualifying for Champions League the season before last. Rodriguez got a taste of European competition and could desire a club that contends for Champions League spots every season.
Like most rumors in their infancy stages there are more things and events to come to start getting truly excited over a switch. But the noise is out there now.
Oh, and Rodriguez's shirt number at Wolfsburg? 34. Granit Xhaka's old number at Borussia Monchengladbach, and the digits tattooed on his back.
Stay tuned.
