Yesterday, lost in all the Granit Xhaka announcement news, Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph reported that Arsenal are interested in £30 million Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, but that they will have to fight off Chelsea and Manchester United for his signature.
It's clear that Arsenal need to do something with their center back situation. As it stands now they're poised to start next season with two players over the age of 30 (Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker - who only has one year left on his contract), with one of them struggling to crack the starting lineup in the second half of the season. And then there's Gabriel, who underwhelmed during the vast majority of his performances last season.
However, the Koulibaly rumor still has quite a bit to go in order to start getting excited over this. Chelsea just apparently had a bid rejected last week, and new manager Antonio Conte is rumored to be readying another bid for his services. There is one thing that tilts the scales in favor of Arsenal, though, and that's that they're in the Champions League and Chelsea's not.
Earlier this week, Arsenal was linked with Bayern Munich's Medhi Benatia, but the noise surrounding him has cooled since the initial rumors were floated. What this says is that the club is more than likely aggressively pursuing another center back this summer. Who ends up the final target, though, appears to be unknown.
