Noëlle Maritz has left Arsenal Women, with the Swiss moving on a transfer to Aston Villa. Maritz’s contract was due to expire in the summer, and in recent weeks she has found herself second choice to Katie McCabe at right back, with the left-footed McCabe playing out of position.

Maritz, a Swiss international, made 92 appearances for Arsenal, scoring twice—in Joe Montemurro’s final game as manager, a 9-0 FA Cup win over Crystal Palace. While Maritz was first choice at right back for much of her time at Arsenal, and an able left back, she found herself second choice last season to Laura Wienroither, with Maritz heavily linked with leaving last January. She did not, and with Arsenal’s injury crisis, Maritz played heavily in the second half of the season. This season, though, Maritz has only played 396 minutes, with her last start coming in November.

Maritz’s departure opens up a place in the squad, with the USWNT full back Emily Fox expected to join in the coming days from North Carolina Courage. Fox, a free agent, started every game at the World Cup for the US, and can play both right back and left back.
