Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson looks set for a loan move to Dutch side Feyenoord, per multiple reports. The Eredivisie side preferred a move for Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, but when he got hurt, the deal fell apart. Arsenal want Nelson to sign a new deal with the club to keep him at the Emirates beyond the two years left on his deal. According to Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports, the winger will sign a one-year extension before leaving.

Reiss Nelson doesn’t seem to have much of a place at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. He spent 2018-19 on loan at Hoffenheim in Germany where he started the season extremely well than tailed off. He made 22 appearances for the Gunners in 2019-20, but mostly under Unai Emery. Last season, the first full one with Arteta in charge, he made just 10 first team appearances.

Nelson, 21, still has plenty of room to develop and is behind established players like Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe on the wings at Arsenal. In a season without European football, he’s not likely to get much playing time in North London.

Even though it seems as if Nelson’s long-term future is somewhere other than the Emirates, another year of meaningful playing time and the development that brings is a good thing. Or at least it should be — there is always a chance the loan doesn’t go well. But assuming it does work out, Reiss Nelson should be a more attractive asset for Arsenal to sell next summer. Or maybe he really impresses at Feyenoord and the Gunners decide to keep him.
