Monday Cannon Fodder: Olympic weekend

And a little bit of Arsenal, just for fun.

I have watched so many hours of Olympic coverage, and we’re only three-ish days into a 17-day marathon. I’m a little worried I’m going to burn out. But it’ll be the best kind of burnout — a sports-induced coma-haze that leaves me muttering “gold, silver, bronze” if I’m coherent at all.

I’ve particularly enjoyed the skateboarding, even if for the life of me I cannot figure out the scoring system. Slow-motion replay has been a godsend — it’s not until I’ve seen tricks slowed down that I can really see what happened and how many times their board spun and flipped in the Street competition.

On the Arsenal side of things, the Gunners beat Millwill 4-1 in a friendly on Saturday, with goals from Calum Chambers, Alexandre Lacazette, Nicolas Pepe, and Folarin Balogun. The highlights are here. The standout performers were pretty much the same as they’ve been all preseason: Nicolas Pepe, Thomas Partey, and Emile Smith Rowe. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked more engaged and involved, too, which is important for the Gunners.

Finally, Arsenal signed Fulham youth side standout Mika Biereth, who notched 21 goals in 21 games (and added 13 assists) in the Premier League South, a youth competition. The Gunners are pretty clearly taking a youth-oriented strategy, especially at striker, a position where the club will have a rather gaping need in a few seasons as things currently stand.
