It’s hard to believe, but the Premier League season kicks off in 25 days. Arsenal open their campaign (and the entire slate of games, actually) away to newly promoted Brentford on August 13th. Then it’s right into the fire with matches against Chelsea and Manchester City.
Does it feel like Arsenal will be playing two of the top clubs in the world in competitive matches in six weeks? Does it feel like Arsenal will be ready to play them then?
For me, it feels as if the preseason just began — because it did — and the club still have plenty of work to do — because they do. There are at least five wantaway players that Edu needs to offload. Apparently, those guys still being on the wage bill and the roster is slowing down additional incoming business, although the Gunners are expected to announce Ben White sometime towards the end of the month or in early August.
But right now, Arsenal have largely the squad that finished 8th last season plus two new players who are expected mostly to be backups. That ain’t it. Things need to start happening and fast.
With the Gunners out of Europe, each of the 38 Premier League matches takes on added importance. They have very little room for error. And once again, the competition for the Champions League places is going to be stiff and congested. Arsenal cannot afford to leave business until later in the window / deadline day if at all possible. Edu needs to grease those transfer wheels and get them turning.
