Arsenal draw Leicester City in the Carabao Cup

The Gunners and the Foxes will both be entering the competition in the 3rd Round. And one will be leaving then, too.

Arsenal have drawn Leicester City away for the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup. Both the Gunners and the Foxes enter the competition late because of their participation in Europe this season. Since Leicester returned to the Premier League, Arsenal have managed a 6-3-3 record against them but have struggled in the most recent meetings (1-1-3).

Last season, Arsenal went out of the Carabao Cup in the 4th round in that wild 5-5 (5-4) match against Liverpool. The season before that, it was Spurs in the Quarters, and before that, the Gunners lost to City in the Final. Arsenal haven’t gone out in the 3rd round since 2014-15 when they lost to Southampton.

Leicester away is a tough one for Arsenal but dropping out of the Carabao Cup wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for the club. Obviously you want to win all the matches you play, and I’d never root for Arsenal to lose. But decongesting the fixture list would help the Gunners in the Premier League, especially at the end of September and at the start of the Christmas period.

The Carabao Cup 3rd round match will be played sometime the week of September 21st. It will come between West Ham and away to Liverpool in the Premier League for the Gunners.
