Arsenal vs. Liverpool Community Shield match thread

Is it a preseason friendly? Is it a competitive fixture? Yes.

It’s been a few years since Arsenal have played in the FA Community Shield. Today, they take on Liverpool, the fourth time the clubs have met in the fixture. The Gunners and the Reds share the wins record (15), but Arsenal have won it outright 14 times and shared it 1 time while the Reds have won it outright 10 times and shared it 5. So yeah, take that Liverpool.

Given the quick turnaround and the strange preseason, I think both clubs will take the match as a bit more of a friendly than they normally would, although Arsenal and Liverpool have sent out a strong starting lineups. I think you’ll see both Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp take full advantage of their substitutes.

For Arsenal, Pablo Mari, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers, and Gabriel Martinelli are all out. Bernd Leno is fit and available. For Liverpool, Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip, Xherdan Shaqiri, Harry Wilson, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all out. Trent Alexander-Arnold faces a late fitness test to determine his availability. Virgil van Dijk, who suffered a nasty cut above his right eye in a friendly last week, should be good to go.

Arsenal - Martinez, Bellerin, David Luiz, Holding, Tierney, Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Xhaka, Saka, Nketiah, Aubameyang

Liverpool - Alisson, Williams, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Wijnaldum, Mane, Salah, Firmino
