Oh look, Vivianne Miedema won another award. The BBC has named her “Footballer of the Year” in the FAWSL. Or to quote Lisa Evans, “another award for Viv, very boring.” Miedema scored 16 goals in 14 games, winning the golden boot for the second year in a row.
Despite what Evans (jokingly) says about the Dutch striker’s awards, Miedema is incredibly exciting on the pitch. She’s an easy comparison to Thierry Henry because they are both outstanding strikers for Arsenal, but the similarities run deeper than that — like Henry, Miedema is a creator as well as a goalscorer. She led the FAWSL in assists this season and was second to Beth Mead last season.
Miedema is next in action when Arsenal take on Tottenham in the FA Cup Quarterfinal the weekend of September 26th-27th. While the broadcast details have not been officially released, the previous rounds were available streaming, so you should be able to watch online.
And you absolutely should. Arsenal Women are one of the best teams in the world, and they are the most successful team in British Women’s footballing history. Vivianne Miedema is a joy to watch, not to mention her teammates (I’m personally partial to Daniëlle van de Donk because she’s never seen a challenge she didn’t think herself favored to win).
