Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang eclipsed Thierry Henry to become the fastest Arsenal player to reach 50 goals for the club. The Gabonese striker scored a brace versus Norwich in the Gunners’ 4-0 win. It was Aubameyang’s 79th appearance for the club.

The record-breaking goal came in the first half and was a result of a Tim Krul goalkeeping error. The incident was reminiscent of Eddie Nketiah’s recent goal at Southampton when keeper Alex McCarthy took too long on the ball. In this instance, the Dutchman lost possession in his own penalty area and Aubameyang seized on the opportunity to easily put the ball in the back of the net.

Aubameyang added his second of the day and his 19th league goal of the season in the 67th minute. He is now tied with Leicester’s Jamie Vardy for the top spot in the battle for the Golden Boot.

The Arsenal captain passed Thierry Henry’s previous record of 83 matches to reach 50 goals. The current top five fastest Arsenal players to reach 50 Premier League goals looks like this:

  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 79 appearances
  • Thierry Henry – 83 appearances
  • Ian Wright – 87 appearances
  • Alexis Sanchez – 101 appearances
  • Olivier Giroud – 113 appearances

In terms of the entire league, Aubameyang’s 50th goal makes him the sixth overall fastest player to reach 50 EPL goals. Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole is first on the list with 50 goals in 65 appearances. Look at the rest of the list and it is obvious that Aubameyang is in great company:

  • Andrew Cole – 65 appearances
  • Alan Shearer – 66 appearances
  • Ruud Van Nistelrooy – 68 appearances
  • Fernando Torres, Mohamed Salah – 72 appearances
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 79 appearances

Aubameyang’s total number of goals scored for Arsenal in all competitions stands at 63 in 101 appearances so far.

It’s still unclear whether Aubameyang will be staying in North London, however, his value to the team is obvious. Contract negotiations are continuing, and manager Mikel Arteta has made the club’s intentions clear.

In an interview last month Arteta stated, “We have many discussions with Pierre, with his family and his agent. I’m pretty positive we can find the right agreement for all parties.
