Bukayo Saka has signed contract extension to remain at Arsenal long-term. The 18-year old standout’s expiring contract had been a source of much consternation for the club and Gooners, especially with rumored links to many of the big European clubs swirling. Signing him to a new deal was probably the single most important piece of business Arsenal needed to accomplish this summer, and now they’ve managed it.
Saka has made 33 appearances for the Gunners this season, scoring three goals and adding 10 assists. Not bad for an 18-year old. More impressive is his positional flexibility. He has played all over the formation for Arsenal this season, even filling in and performing really well at left back for several games. With Kieran Tierney healthy, Saka has moved up in the formation to his preferred left wing. Aidan wrote about Saka’s importance to what Mikel Arteta wants from the side tactically a few days ago.
I’m not sure I can overstate how important getting this deal done was for the club. Arsenal are trying to rebuild and letting one of the two breakout young stars of the season (I’m counting Martinelli as the other) leave would have been a massive blow on multiple levels. It would have set the roster back and hurt the club on the pitch; it would have been a signal, rightly or wrongly, to everyone that Arsenal aren’t fully committed and willing to do what it takes to challenge for the Champions League. This deal is massively great news.
Now, let’s get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s situation sorted.
