Gabriel Magalhaes has tested positive for COVID-19, per Arsenal.com. The Brazilian centerback missed the match against Chelsea due to close contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus and had already begun isolating. On Saturday, the club said they hoped he would only miss three matches, which would have him available to return on January 9th in the FA Cup against Newcastle. Today’s update hasn’t changed that anticipated timetable. Of course, the timing of his return now hinges on multiple negative tests.

There is no word on whether he is experiencing any symptoms. Obviously, our hope is that he recovers quickly and without issue.

Gabriel’s positive test comes the same day as Manchester City’s match against Everton was postponed due to multiple positive tests at City and amid an uptick in cases in Britain overall. Earlier this season, Newcastle closed their facilities because of an outbreak. It’s all a stark reminder that even with vaccine distribution beginning worldwide, COVID-19 is still very much a problem that requires the utmost attention and caution.

Pablo Mari deputized well at left centerback against Chelsea, and you’d expect him to continue in the position at least until Gabriel is back available.
