There’s really not much to say that hasn’t already been said many, many times. Arsenal stink. Arsenal hadn’t lost four straight at home since 1959. They lost to Burnley at home today for the first time since the 1970’s. Burnley had never beaten Arsenal in the Premier League. The club is off to it’s worst start since the early ‘80’s. They can’t score goals. And now they’ve added “completely lose their minds and get sent off” to the list of consistent foibles.
Arsenal were in control of today’s match and in the ascendancy when Granit Xhaka lost his mind, grabbed an opponent by the throat, and got sent off. The Gunners have now had 6 men sent off since Mikel Arteta took over, twice as many as the next closest team. Arteta, to his credit I guess, called the move by Xhaka “even worse” than Pepe’s lapse.
But Xhaka’s moment of insanity doesn’t get Mikel Arteta off the hook. He keeps selecting Xhaka. He keeps selecting Willian. He keeps putting out basically the same lineup and expecting it to work.
On the one hand, it’s hard to imagine a manager at a club like Arsenal quite literally having a historically bad start to the season and keeping his job. And yet I firmly believe that Arsenal are not going to fire Mikel Arteta. Personally, I’m not convinced it would be the right move anyway, but I lean more and more in that direction with each insipid performance. And if they did fire him, do you have any confidence Edu and co. would hire the right guy to replace him? And if they get rid of Edu too, do you have any confidence that the Kroenkes would get it right either?
Arsenal are profoundly broken, from the owners on down. I don’t see it getting better anytime soon. Eat Arby’s.
