Wednesday Cannon Fodder: pop quiz

Today’s quiz was fun, but also a bit frustrating for me. It’s “Name the Footballers in Advertisements.” You’re given a picture of a footballer in a commercial, and you’ve got to identify who it is. I did well enough 14/20, and I’m only kicking myself for not getting one other — my brain broke and couldn’t come up with a name that was definitely in there.

The quiz got me thinking about classic football ads, and my mind went immediately to the Brazil in the airport ‘98 World Cup Nike ad. It’s still a classic 22 years later.

I also enjoyed the Joga Bonito ads from the 2006 World Cup, but since they featured Eric Cantona, I can understand some people not liking them. He’s a, uh, divisive figure.

It’s a bit of a shame for U.S.-based football fans because the majority of footballers endorsing random products and featuring in hilariously terrible commercials doesn’t make it to our airwaves. Instead, we get a relentless string of Baker Mayfield living in the Cleveland Browns stadium. So for our TSFers across the pond, do any particularly absurd adverts come to mind for you?
