The Shirt Fuse: David Luiz shirt number announced

New, comments

But does he have the #1 hairdo at the club?

No word on whether he is taking the nickname Jumpman Luiz.

New centerback signing David Luiz will wear number 23 for Arsenal. It struck me as a little strange that he didn’t take #6, recently vacated by Laurent Koscielny’s move to Bordeaux, but Luiz started his club career wearing #23 at Benfica and wore #32 for a time at PSG. Clearly it’s significant to him personally.

Danny Welbeck was the last Arsenal man to wear #23. Before him, Arsenal legend Nicklas Bendtner wore it for a season, and before that, the number found itself on a significantly smaller jersey — that of Andrey Arshavin.

Hopefully Luiz models his play after the true club legend to wear the number — Sol Campbell. The defensive stalwart wore #23 for five seasons after upgrading his North London home (sorry not sorry, couldn’t help myself there).

I can’t wait for the iconic photo picturing “David Luiz 23” standing over a 90th minute free kick against Chelsea, seconds before blistering a 35-yarder top bins for the win.
