Arsenal are interested in 20-year old RB Leipzig centerback Dayot Upamecano and have reportedly had a £55M bid rejected. The under-21 French international made 55 appearances across all competitions last season and is considered one of the top centerback prospects in Europe. The German side value the young Frenchman at £70M, but the two clubs are “hopeful a deal can get done” before the Premier League buy window closes on Thursday.
That optimism is fueled by Leipzig’s interest in Emile Smith Rowe either on loan or full sale. Smith Rowe spent the second half of last season with Red Bull and is expected to be sent out on loan again this season. The inclusion of ESR in the deal, who Arsenal value at £25M, could lower the price enough for the cash-strapped Gunners to push the deal through.
With the departure of Laurent Koscielny to Bordeaux, the Gunners are in need of centerback reinforcements, and a promising, already top-tier proven, young player like Upamecano would fit that bill nicely.
Upamecano is not the only centerback being linked with a move to North London. The Gunners have also kicked the tires on a loan for Juventus’ Daniele Rugani but have had their initial approaches rebuffed.
