As you may have heard, Arsenal are bad at defending. They gave up 51 goals last season, which was 12 more than any team in the top five and third-worst in the top ten, behind West Ham (55) and Manchester United (54). Goals conceded is, of course, not the only way to evaluate a defense, but it’s a simple thumbnail sketch that allows for enough interpretation to know Arsenal, who also gave up 51 goals in 2017/18, need defensive help urgently.
The transfer window closes, mostly, on Thursday (10AM US time, 5PM UK time) - I say “mostly” because, while all purchasing must be concluded by that time, clubs in England can still sell players to clubs outside of England until the continental transfer window closes on the 31st.
With only three days to go before the buying part of the window closes, there comes news today that Arsenal are in fact looking to shore up that defense. They have been linked with Juventus’ Daniele Rugani and RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, both young center backs, a definite position of need for the club.
Arsenal’s first offer of €60 million for the 20 year old Upamecano has reportedly been rejected, but it is thought that another offer will be made before Thursday. Rugani, a 25 year old who already has four Serie A titles under his belt, seems to be the plan B in this whole story if the Gunners can’t land Upamecano, but either would be a very welcome addition to the club, and both would be...well, let’s not get too greedy.
On second thought, let’s get greedy. Bring them both.
