Raheem Sterling’s hat trick proves valuable in week 1

Week one of the 2019-2020 Premier League is in the books, and with it the first week of the Short Fuse Fantasy League.

Let me begin by saying that, when I started the league, I was expecting somewhere in the range of 50 participants at most. To have over 160(!!!) is massive and exceeds even my wildest hopes. I cannot thank you all enough for taking part.

The top spot after the opening week belongs to team Aubalaca, whose 100 points just barely edged Da Invincible’s 99. Only 10 points stood between first place and ninth, as each team in the top nine featured the week’s top point earner Raheem Sterling.

Raheem Sterling’s hat-trick heroics for Manchester City over West Ham proved to be a huge reward for those who had him in their lineup, and even bigger for those who captained the Englishman. His 20 point performance was the highest of the week by far, followed by Burnley defender Erik Pieters and City’s Riyahd Maherz, who both earned 14 points.

Despite Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s game-deciding goal, the highest point-earner for Arsenal was none other than Ainsley Maitland-Niles, whose impressive 12 point performance away to Newcastle earned him a spot on the opening week Premier League Fantasy Dream Team. His performance was good enough to not only ensure Arsenal’s victory against the Magpies, but also to be week one’s seventh highest fantasy points earner. For a defender, that is massive.

So, how did your teams do? Mine had a week to forget, as my paltry 35 points puts me well behind the 8-ball after just one weekend. Week two has the potential to be beneficial for those who have Aubameyang in their line-ups. Arsenal host the Clarets for the Gunners’ first home match of the season, and the striker has never failed to score against Burnley.

Good luck, everyone, and choose your line-ups wisely!
