In addition to transfer season, June brings with it the less glamorous, not as catchily named End Of Contract So See You Later season. Player contracts end June 30 every year, so about this time of the month, most clubs will have made decisions about which out of contract players will be allowed to leave, the polite way of saying “you’re done here thanks for your time”.
This year’s list of departing players doesn’t contain any huge shocks - there’s Petr Cech, there’s Aaron Ramsey, there’s Danny Welbeck - but it does contain surprises, in that Arsenal apparently employed a player named Charlie Gilmour. Who knew?
All kidding aside, Gilmour (age 20), Cohen Bramall (23), and Julio Pleguezuelo (22) are off to pastures new. Pleguezuelo’s been on loan in Spain since 2016, Bramall spent last season at Birmingham City, and Gilmour made two appearances for Arsenal, most memorably in the Europa League group stage match against Vorskla Poltava.
While they never made much of an impression at the club, they were nevertheless at the club and now they’re not, so we wish them much success in their future endeavors.
