Arsenal secured the three points they needed at Vicarage Road against Watford. It was not a vintage performance by the Gunners. However, considering the team’s road problems this season, a win and a clean sheet are a welcome change.
The highlight of the match was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal in the tenth minute of play. The combination of Ben Foster’s goalkeeping error and Aubameyang’s tenacity led to a gift goal which proved the match winner.
In addition to the goal and the victory, there was another moment in this match that Arsenal fans enjoyed almost as much.
Just one minute after the goal, Troy Deeney was shown a straight red card for elbowing Lucas Torreira in the face. There was much debate by the match commentators on whether Deeney’s actions were deserving of a red card or not. Regardless he was off, and Watford were reduced to ten men due to the actions of their captain. Of course the Gunners faithful enjoyed seeing Deeney get his marching orders.
Everyone is familiar with the phrase what goes around, comes around. In the case of Deeney, karma has totally caught up with him.
Back in the fall of 2017 Watford came from behind to defeat the Gunners 2-1. In a post-match interview Deeney stated that Arsenal were lacking “cojones”. That didn’t go down too well with the fans or the Arsenal players.
A bit of retribution was had by the Gunners when the two sides met again in May 2018. Arsenal won 3-0 that day and Petr Cech saved a Deeney penalty shot.
Today’s red card was the icing on the cake. Deeney may have “cojones” but in this instance they got him sent off. Of course Arsenal fans loved it.
Those cajones worked a treat tonight @T_Deeney!
