Saturday’s 1-1 draw in the North London Derby left a bad taste in the mouths of Arsenal fans and players alike. Now that bitter taste will linger just a little longer, as Arsenal’s attempts at appealing Lucas Torreira’s red card were denied by the FA early Wednesday morning.
Arsenal's Lucas Torreira will serve three-game ban after appeal against red card at Tottenham is rejected https://t.co/SyDV3awrW1— MailOnline Sport (@MailSport) March 6, 2019
Torreira was shown a straight red by referee Anthony Taylor in the waning moments of the match, which featured some pretty egregious officiating both ways. Despite winning the ball, Torreira’s studs caught Danny Rose firmly on the ankle on the follow-through of his sliding tackle, which sent the Spurs defender tumbling through the air. While there were plenty of questionable calls that went unpunished that day, this one did not, and it ended up costing Arsenal dearly.
With the three match ban upheld, Arsenal are going to be without their best central defensive midfielder for some crucial league matches, most notably this Sunday’s match-up against Manchester United. With top four implications for both teams, the stakes are exceedingly high, and both teams will want to be at their best on Sunday. The Uruguayan will also miss the home stand against Newcastle and a trip to face Everton at Goodison Park.
The silver lining is that Torreira is still available for selection in the Europa League, which all but ensures that we will see him lined up to face Stade Rennes for both legs of the round of 16.
