Lia Wälti, Arsenal’s key defensive midfielder, has signed a new contract at Arsenal, that will keep her at the club for the “next few years.”
Extremly happy and proud to stay here for a few more years! ❤️— Lia Wälti (@liawaelti) December 30, 2019
I believe that there is a lot more to reach with this team! https://t.co/TdiDRB8ESL
Per Arseblog News’ Tim Stillman, Wälti only had 6 months to run on the contract that she signed when she joined the club in the summer of 2018 from Turbine Potsdam. Most contracts at Arsenal, and across the WSL in general, are for two years.
Wälti missed the second half of last season with a knee injury, but impressed enough to be named in the PFA Team of the Year. She returned to full fitness earlier this season and has again become a key part of Arsenal’s midfield, with her ability on the ball, both in passing and being press resistant, and reading of the game key for Arsenal’s controlling game. Wälti, like other players who have extended at Arsenal in recent months, is happy with how the Gunners are doing, saying, “The main goal is always winning the title and going into the Champions League next year, but I would definitely also like to get to the FA Cup final to play at Wembley! Everyone dreams of playing in the Champions League too and we want to go as far as we possibly can.”
Wälti joins Kim Little, Beth Mead, Danïelle van de Donk, Louise Quinn, Vivianne Miedema, Lisa Evans, and Katie McCabe in signing a new contract in the last 12 months.
