This was a game of two halves, but not in the inspirational way. Arsenal looked pretty decent in the first half - if they didn’t look much like scoring, they at least looked relatively decent at the back. Then, the second half started, and Arsenal...didn’t. They were desperately trying to repeat the first half of the West Ham game, it seemed, by having no real idea what they wanted to do or any knowledge of how they wanted to do it.
And then Liege scored. Which, instead of tightening Arsenal up, made things worse. Being down a goal made Arsenal demonstrably worse, then going down a second made it even more desperate. Then, though, Alexandre Lacazette, who up till then had had a desperately poor game, got his head to a Bukayo Saka cross and headed home a crucial away goal.
One Saka goal later, and it was 2-2, which is where it ended. And with that, Arsenal are through to the knockouts as group winners.
