Arsenal have sold 22-year old striker Chuba Akpom to PAOK in Superleague Greece. Akpom joined Arsenal at six years old, made his competitive debut for the club at 17, but struggled to make a first team impact. He has spent most of his career on loan, going out 6 different times, and only made 12 senior appearances for the Gunners.
The move makes sense for both Akpom and Arsenal. He was not going to crack the first team behind Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Danny Welbeck, and Alex Iwobi, and with Eddie Nketiah and other younger, promising players coming up through the ranks, he was no longer one of the “strikers of the future.” By going to PAOK, who finished second in the Greek league last year, Akpom has a chance to play regular, first team football, and a shot at the Champions League — PAOK are in the 3rd round of qualifying. From Arsenal’s perspective, the move clears wages, brings in a nominal transfer fee, and frees up a roster spot.
Akpom tweeted out a nice farewell message to the club and its supporters as well as a video montage of his best moments at Arsenal.
Best of luck Chuba!
