Arsenal was looking for its first win of the new campaign at home to West Ham on Saturday. After losing to Manchester City and Chelsea to start the season, fans were on edge as this one kicked off.

The Gunners’ shaky defense didn’t help settle nerves as West Ham captain Marko Arnautovic scored the opener in the 25th minute. Luckily for Unai Emery and the crowd at the Emirates, the scoring machine that is Nacho Monreal was on hand to get one back just five minutes later.

Arsenal went on to win 3-1 and give Emery his first Premier League win.

All joking aside, Monreal’s goal was his fourth in the league in calendar year 2018. The only defender to score more than the Spaniard is Patrick van Aanholt of Crystal Palace.

Monreal scored his first goal on January 20th in a man of the match performance as Arsenal defeated Crystal Palace 4-1. He headed home the opener in the sixth minute and assisted on two other goals.

The left-back’s second came just ten days later in his side’s dreadful 3-1 loss away to Swansea in the pouring rain.

In April the Gunners’ ran out 4-1 winners over West Ham. The game remained scoreless until Monreal got his third goal of the year in the 51st minute.

The defender also scored in his side’s 0-3 Europa League match at Östersund in February of this year.

It’s worth noting that Monreal also scored two goals last October in victories at home to Brighton and away at Everton.

Unai Emery still has a lot of work to do to tighten up Arsenal’s defense. For his part Monreal has proven to be one of the team’s more reliable defenders. The fact that he can pop up and score crucial goals as well, is a bonus, particularly on a day when the forwards are not firing on all cylinders.
