Arsenal have reportedly offered Aaron Ramsey a new, 5-year contract with a significant increase over his current £110,000 a week wages (link behind a registration / subscription wall). The Welshman has one year remaining on his contract but hinted that he would like to remain with the club. Said Ramsey when asked if he was looking forward to working with Unai Emery:
Of course. I haven’t spoken to him at all yet, but I think it’s an exciting time for the club. I can’t wait to get back there now.
Emery would like to build his team around Ramsey, and the two will meet next week . Unlike with Alexis Sánchez and Mesut Özil, Arsenal are expected to sell Ramsey if he does not sign a new contract to keep him at the Emirates beyond the upcoming season.
Locking up Ramsey long-term would be a fantastic move. He is a driving force in the midfield and, when healthy, a dangerous attacking threat. His ability to push from deep, unbalance opposing defenses, and create mismatches frees up space for Mesut Özil to create and strikers to run in behind.
He is also Arsenal’s longest-tenured player, which while not exactly relevant to whether Arsenal should re-sign him, might help to create a sense of continuity and stability for a nervous fanbase during a period of change at the club. Although there has been no indication as to who will be the next club captain, Ramsey’s tenure and experience should put him near the top of the list of candidates. Indeed Arsene Wenger said as much last year.
