The Arsene Wenger farewell tour continues on Sunday with the Boss’ last visit to Old Trafford and one last matchup with noted Wenger-basher grudgingly respectful rival Jose Mourinho. Mourinho had Wenger’s number early on in the rivalry - he didn’t lose any of the first 13 meetings. Wenger’s teams have bounced back slightly of late, winning two and drawing one of the last five against Mourinho-led sides.
Old Trafford has played host to some of the most ignominious and memorable moments of Arsene Wenger’s tenure at Arsenal. It was where the Invincibles 49-game unbeaten run finally came to an end. It was where Wenger suffered his worst defeat as Arsenal manager, 8-2 in 2011. But it was also where Sylvain Wiltord scored to clinch the league title and a double for the Gunners in 2002. Tangentially related to Wenger, it was where a Cesc Fàbregas-thrown slice of pizza nailed Sir Alex Ferguson during a post-match scrum.
A loss on Sunday would be Arsenal’s 10th away defeat on the season, equaling the club’s worst away record in nearly 30 years. The Gunners have lost their last five away games in the Premier League; they haven’t lost six consecutive away games in the league since 1966.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan is available for selection, having recovered from the knee injury he suffered against CSKA Moscow. I suspect he will get a run-out to regain his form ahead of Thursday’s return leg clash with Atlético Madrid, although it is unclear how long he will play. Mohamed Elneny is still out with an ankle injury. Wenger will likely rest a number of his preferred eleven, with Laurent Koscielny, Jack Wilshere, Héctor Bellerín, and Aaron Ramsey the most likely candidates for rotation.
Manchester United’s only injured player is backup goalkeeper Sergio Romero. When the two clubs met in December, it was the man Romero backs-up, David de Gea, who stole the show. His 15 saves and man of the match performance led United to a 3-1 win.
I almost forgot - some dude named Alexis plays for United now. Hadn’t thought about him in months.
