Arsenal took a step to ensure that their paper thin central midfielder would still have players in it as they announced Mohamed Elneny has signed a long term contract extension.

How long? We don’t know. How much? We don’t know. So is it a good move? Yes. Yes it is.

The 25-year-old central midfield has made 65 appearances for Arsenal since joining the club in 2016, on a Winter transfer from Basil, though only scored twice. Largely a bench player, Elneny has begun to grow his game and has shown a growing ability to compliment both Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey in the midfield. His play has also been important to Egypt as he helped The Pharaohs qualify for their first World Cup since 1990. Pretty big year for Mo.

Solid, if not the straw that stirs the drink, and versatile make him an important cog in the very weak central midfield. With Jack Wilshere’s tenure at Arsenal now very much in doubt, ensuring extra bodies in the midfield to compliment new arrivals in the summer, which really are essential, should always be looked upon favourably.
