Jack Wilshere will not be in the England squad for Friday’s friendly against the Netherlands. Wilshere, 26, has not played for England since their exit from the European Union Championships against Iceland in June 2016. Wilshere’s absence from the squad is yet unknown, with Gareth Southgate set to address the media during his pre-match press conference later this evening. It is, then, unknown if Wilshere can play for England against Italy on Tuesday.
If it is, as one would suspect, injury, then it only highlights the precarious line for Wilshere. He had been speaking only yesterday about his belief that he is fit. Connected with that is the brewing contract storm with Arsenal. Wilshere, of course, is out of contract at the end of the season, and to his reported distaste, Arsenal have offered a pay cut in weekly wage, albeit with pay as you play bonuses, some of which are very easily attainable.
