Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck is set to be the next Arsenal player to leave on a free transfer this summer, after Sky Sports News reported earlier today that they understand from sources that the club has no intention on engaging the England international in contract extension talks.
Welbeck, currently out with a serious ankle injury he picked up in the overly-physical Europa League encounter versus Sporting Lisbon, has been with the club since 2014, having joined from his boyhood club Manchester United, and because of that ankle injury and the procedures that have followed since it appears we have seen the last of him in an Arsenal shirt.
Welbeck would follow, at present time, Aaron Ramsey in leaving the club on a free transfer because an inability on both parties to come to either a contract extension or an ability to move the player in an open transfer market window. For the sake of the club and their continued insistence on a self-sustainable model of transfer financing, let’s hope these are the final two players who have value and are allowed to leave without any compensation back.
And to Danny Welbeck, we’ll never forget the Leicester goal, your smile, your energy, and your wild, hilarious celebrations. If this is goodbye, then we wish you nothing but the best as you move on.
