Arsenal team news ahead of Manchester United

Nothing is ever simple with Mesut Özil.

Arsenal released team news and an injury report for Wednesday’s match away to Manchester United. It contained no surprises. The good news is Shkodran Mustafi, who left the Tottenham match with an injury, was not on the report, so it appears he is good to go.

Granit Xhaka: will miss the match after receiving his 5th domestic yellow card on Sunday.

Mesut Özil: doubtful with the back problem that forced him to miss the Tottenham match and has been troubling him since Tuesday, according to Unai Emery. Özil trained on his own on Monday and will be assessed ahead of the match.

Some in the media / Twitterverse have questioned the severity of Özil’s current back issue / speculated that he might not be injured at all. Earlier this season when he missed the West Ham game, there were rumors that he was dropped because of a training ground dispute with Unai Emery. The official word was that he was sick.

The German was dropped last week against Bournemouth. When asked why, Unai Emery cryptically said, “We thought how we can do better in the match, a very demanding match with physicality and intensity.” Then, Özil’s back starts bothering him, and he misses two matches? It seems like there might be more going on here.

Or he just has a back problem and that’s the end of it.

Nacho Monreal: doubtful with the hamstring issue that has kept him out since early October. On November 23rd, the Evening Standard confirmed that he would not return to full training for two weeks. The official word from Arsenal today is that the Spaniard will be assessed ahead of the match on Wednesday. It seems unlikely (to me) he will be available.

Laurent Koscielny: doubtful, being assessed ahead of the match. The Frenchman continues to rehab from his torn Achilles and played with the U23’s last week. That said, I doubt he makes his senior team return against United.

Dinos Mavropanos: still out with a groin injury, expected back in training this month.

Danny Welbeck: out, recovering from surgery on his ankle.
