It’s that time of year again. The festive holiday season means the fixtures come fast and furious. (Arsenal have seven matches between now and New Year’s Day). It also means that the rumor mill is upon us, as the January transfer window will soon open.
Today several outlets have reported that Arsenal are considering making a move for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill. This comes on the back of a story last month in The Telegraph that the Blues are prepared to allow Cahill to go out on loan in January. The 32-year-old’s contract runs out at the end of the season and it appears he is not a part of Maurizio Sarri’s plans.
Arsenal’s current list of defensive injuries makes Cahill an appealing possibility for the short term.
In addition to Rob Holding who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season Arsenal are also dealing with the following:
- Konstantinos Mavropanos is back in training having recovered from a groin injury.
- Shkodran Mustafi is nursing a hamstring injury and is being assessed game by game.
- Nacho Monreal is just back after missing eleven matches with hamstring troubles.
- Laurent Koscielny is starting his first game since May after recovering from a long-term injury.
The Arsenal faithful all know that Unai Emery will be looking to shore up the defensive unit he inherited. These necessary changes will take time, however, and probably a few transfer windows. That’s what makes the possibility of a player like Cahill coming in on loan look like a good idea.
Cahill has been a mainstay of Chelsea’s backline over the past seven seasons and served as team captain. He’s been capped by England 61 times and has won several titles and trophies while at Stamford Bridge.
What are your thoughts on these potential signings and what Arsenal should do in the January transfer window?
