Arsenal play Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, in the first of back-to-back Europa League games that could see the Gunners take control of Group E.
After the first two group stage matches, Arsenal and Sporting are tied on points, with Arsenal first in the group thanks to goal difference. The two sides’ matches against each other will likely determine the group winner and runner-up, and as the runner-up can draw clubs like PSG in the first knockout round, both teams will be eager to walk away with the three points today.
Arsenal are very short at left back at the moment—neither Nacho Monreal nor Sead Kolasinac even traveled to Portugal thanks to pulled hamstrings, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles is still on the comeback trail with his broken fibula. We might see Stephan Lichtsteiner filling in on the left again, and the Gunners have also brought Carl Jenkinson with them. They are a bit healthier at centerback, but may play again without Sokratis, depending on how healed his ankle actually is.
