Our long national nightmare is over. No longer do we have to wander in the desolate wasteland of the international break and the Nations League. The Premier League has returned.
On Monday, Leicester visits the Emirates to try to cool off red-hot Arsenal. If you’d forgotten, the Gunners have won 9 matches in a row in all competitions and are (maybe) starting to settle into Unai Emery’s system. The Foxes have been up and down so far this season, and their four wins and four losses has them 11th in the table, only one spot behind Manchester United (sorry, I couldn’t resist).
When the two clubs last met, Dinos Mavropanos was sent off in the 15th minute and Leicester won 3-1. Before that, Arsenal beat Leicester on opening day in a 4-3 thriller that might have been the club’s most exciting game of the season.
Arsenal will likely be without Sokratis, who picked up an ankle injury on international duty. Petr Cech and Danny Welbeck are both facing fitness tests and are questionable for Monday’s match. Mesut Ozil, who missed the Fulham match before the break with back spasms, will be available for selection. Long-term absentees Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Laurent Koscielny have both returned to training, although Koscielny’s return to the lineup is still a ways away.
Leicester captain Wes Morgan is suspended for the match after picking up his second red card of the season against Everton before the international break. Winger Demarai Gray is returning from an ankle injury, and it is unclear whether he will be fit in time.
Should Arsenal win on Monday and extend their winning streak to 10, it will be the sixth time in club history they’ve won 10 straight in all competitions. The most recent 10+ game winning streak (12) was snapped in October 2007.
