Henrikh Mkhitaryan is already doing his best to wipe away Arsenal fans’ memories of Alexis Sanchez, taking the Chilean’s #7 as his shirt number for the club.

Besides Alexis, the #7 shirt has a rich history at the club, as club legends Robert Pires, David Rocastle, and Liam Brady have all worn it. As did another former Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder to play for Arsenal, Tomas Rosicky.
Other than his three-year spell at Borussia Dortmund, where he was the #10, Mkhitaryan has worn #22, currently taken by Jeff Reine-Adelaide, his entire club career. Depending on your interest level in this, it might be a little surprising Mkhitaryan didn’t lobby Jeff for a switch. The previous two players to wear that number, however, were Yaya Sanogo and Francis Coquelin, so maybe Mkhitaryan made the wise choice in not asking.
If you want to buy new Mkhitaryan gear now that the number is official, you can do so here.

UPDATE: Because Alexis appeared in the competition earlier this season wearing #7, Mkhitaryan will not be able to wear that number in the Europa League. He will still wear #7 in the Premier League, but will have to choose something else in the Europa League, so we’ve got another exciting shirt reveal coming soon!
