Alexis Sanchez stays home. Arsene Wenger says that’s to keep it from being a distraction during games because of all the transfer rumours flying about. Arsenal lose embarrassingly. What’s that noise? It’s the rumour mill hitting overdrive.

Wenger said earlier that a replacement for Alexis would be bought if he is sold this January and, now, we have our first likely lad to step into the team:

Beyond the tweet, the rumour has hit Metro, Sky Sports, Daily Star, The Bleacher Report and other less desirable rags. If it’s only smoke, it’s a hell of a lot of smoke.

Before we get to the exciting part of the tweet, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is quite the name. Strong attacking player who appears to be on the outs with Dortmund for various reasons. He’d be a solid January signing... for a team that is contending. How he works with an Alexis-less Arsenal is less well known and, for a team now well on the outside looking in, it feels like a signing to try and save face than building for the future.

However, Kike “usually reliable” Marin adds “and one more”. The prospect of adding two forces to Arsenal at the expense of one Alexis Sanchez is a strong bit of winter business for Wenger. This might be saving face but if he’s adding some young high talent like a Malcolm or whomever, it is a step in the right direction that Arsenal might be set to flex its financial muscle.

Either way, if anything was apparent from today’s loss to Bournemouth, Arsenal need an injection of talent who are raring to go. This is such a move.
