Remember back in April, when I wrote and published a story about a rumor claiming Arsenal might be switching kit manufacturers, from Puma to adidas? And remember how the publication date of that story was April 1? Yeah, I got fooled. But maybe I didn’t! Maybe I’m not a fool after all!*
The always-reliable Footy Headlines - the ones who pulled the April Fools’ joke - today quoted the Mirror (I know) as saying that Arsenal may negotiate their way out of their Puma deal, worth £30 million a year, and then become adidas’ fourth Premier League team (they lost Chelsea to Nike this season).
In the arms race that is Premier League sponsorship dollars, it’s been well known for a while that Arsenal lag behind most of their Top Club Club rivals. If this deal turns out to be real, it’s good to see that they’re trying to do something about it. Plus, it helps out those of us in Portland because adidas US is based here and has an employee store here where I can get things for half price. So for me, this is a huge win!
I’m still not 100% convinced that it will happen, but Footy Headlines aren’t known for their wild rumor-mongering, so even though the original source is the Mirror, I’m going to give this one a 6/10 for probability.
*I’m still probably a fool, just not for this reason
