Over the years, there have been a few players that have been termed “long term interests” of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger. Karim Benzema, Kostas Manola, even the just-signed Alexandre Lacazette have all been linked with Arsenal in more than one transfer window. Another such player is Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho, Arsenal reportedly having been interested in him since the 2014/15 season.

When you combine that with reports from several, shall we say, lesser-grade sources, that I won’t link here, that that “unnamed Premier League club” is Arsenal, it makes for quite the puzzle.
The first question, I guess, is are any other Premier League teams interested in Carvalho? I mean. there are 19 non-Arsenal teams in the league; surely one of them might be interested in Carvalho, right? Both the Manchester clubs have been interested in Carvalho in the past, but for some reason, this go-around, it’s all about Arsenal as far as the rumor mill goes. I’m not sure I’d put Arsenal at the top of that list of three, because a) Champions League and b) Arsene’s Francis Coquelin obsession are things.
The second question, of course, is - if Carvalho to Arsenal is in fact a thing, who does he displace? My dream, of course, is that he would send Francis Coquelin packing. But I’m not sure that would happen, so in a midfield that is already full-ish, I’m not sure there’s room for a William Carvalho.
So, as with a lot of these things, be very, very skeptical as you start seeing CARVALHO TO MYSTERY TEAM IT’S PROBABLY ARSENAL headlines clogging up your news feeds today.
