This is, as we all know, a very big summer for Arsenal. They need to reload and refresh their squad, and they need to do so in a way that will allow them to get back into the Champions League. More than anything, though, they need to reassure a restless fan base - or at least a very vocal portion of said fan base - that they are trying to push forward and get Arsenal to that mythical “next level” that a lot of people seem to think is Arsenal’s rightful place to be.
The first steps on that road were seemingly taken this week, with reports of an escalating series of bids for Monaco’s 18 year old Kylian Mbappe. And if the club is willing to set a record - not just a club record, but a world record - with a transfer in June, that probably bodes well for the rest of the summer, at least in my mind.
So let’s talk about the rest of the summer for a second. Let’s not talk about specific players, but about a club philosophy. Arsenal are pretty fiscally conservative, of course, but a nine-figure bid for a single player would seem to signal a shift in that philosophy, so what does that mean for the rest of this transfer season, and for future transfer seasons?
More to the point, I guess: When you combine an Mbappe bid with last summer’s £100 million outlay, whether or not that bid is successful, do you believe Arsenal do enough to strengthen their squad every summer? The narrative around Arsenal, of course, is that they never do - they buy kids or, in the Summer of Cech, they buy nobody. But in the last couple summers, that hasn’t been the case, and if last summer was a spree, this summer is starting with a potential binge.
Is that enough for you? Even if the Mbappe bid is unsuccessful, are you happy that Arsenal are in for big names, which generally in the last few years they have not been, as they’ve signed a lot of good players but not that big name that a lot of fans are desperate to see get signed.
If Mbappe signs, that’s a highly promising winger and a left back, both under 24, and both done before the window even opens. Again without getting into the weeds of actual names, what type of player would you like to see Arsenal go after next? Does this Mbappe pursuit show you the ambition that Arsenal are often accused of lacking in the transfer market, or have several seasons of not getting involved in Mbappe-level talent left you skeptical?
Are Arsenal starting to show more ambition in the transfer market?
This poll is closed
Yes, even if Mbappe doesn’t sign I’m glad Arsenal were in the running
Unless Mbappe actually signs, a pursuit of him doesn’t change anything
It’s too early to tell, but the signs are promising
Same old Arsenal, they’ll just sign more kids and finish fourth
Polls aren’t nuanced enough, I have other thoughts (please explain in the comments)
