Alexis is now Chile’s leading scorer

Thanks, meaningless tournament!

The Confederations Cup is meaningless. It’s a friendly, designed as a dry run so that World Cup host countries can shake out the bugs in their World Cup planning and preparation, both logistically and as a first run-out for any new stadiums built for the event.

That said, Alexis set two pretty cool records in this meaningless competition today. This goal makes him Chile’s all time leading scorer:

That was Alexis’ 38th goal in all competitions for his country, breaking the tie he was in with Marcelo Salas.

The other record is one he has just tied; this game was his 112th cap, tying him with Claudio Bravo, so that record will continue to leapfrog between those two players for a while I would think.

Anyway, Alexis had himself a pretty good day today - Chile and Germany remain tied at the top of Group B with 4 points, so they’ll go on to the oh c’mon who cares you’re not watching this tournament anyway. The Premier League starts again in a month.
