It’s no secret that Mesut Özil (and probably not coincidentally Arsenal as a whole) has been undergoing a pretty bad slump recently. So hopefully his showing in a win over West Ham yesterday, in which the German playmaker scored a goal and notched an assist, is a sign that he is rounding back into form for the home stretch of the season.
Arsène Wenger certainly seems to think that is the case. Per arseblog, Wenger said after the match, “I feel that he is back physically, with focus.
“He felt, I think I know him quite well, I felt he had been hit hard by us going out in the Champions League and it took him some time to recover from that mentally.” Same, to be honest.
Wenger went on to say, “I feel for a few weeks now in training that he is really focused again and that comes out in the game.”
An in-form Özil is pretty much essential to Arsenal’s hopes of rallying back into a top four spot, and when he is playing well he is one the most enjoyable players in the world to watch, so hopefully Wenger is correct.
