Last week, rumors started flying that Arsene Wenger would
stay leave tear down rebuild restaff be making a lot of changes at Arsenal, two of which were the seeming inevitable departures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil, as he attempts to reload for one last shot at a Premier League title and/or a Champions League push.
Today, though, Özil came out and poured some cold water, sort of, on the idea he would be sold. When he was asked by German media about reports that Wenger would be selling him, he said
"And you believe that Wenger would go to journalists before telling me? I know him differently."
Which, I mean, apart from actually being true, that’s an excellent point. Wenger, more than any other manager, does not do business through the media - he’s very closed, very quiet. And that’s the way it should be. I don’t think any of us would place too much credence in a report from the Express in the first place, and the fact that Özil didn’t play coy about it was also as reassuring as these things can be under the circumstances.
Özil was also, of course, asked about Arsenal’s current form. He, of course, said Arsenal were “not happy with sixth place” and that he is “convinced we will turn it around soon”. Let’s hope he’s right.
