He’s a new face and name for most of the Gooner faithful, but Joe Willock has been a youth academy member for Arsenal for many years and with is first team starts, Arsene Wenger seems to like what he sees. The club announced today that Willock has signed a long-term contract extension with Arsenal. The details were not released.
The 18-year old has been deployed as a central midfielder, making his first team debut in the Carabao Cup against Doncaster Rovers on September 20th. Since then, he’s made four more appearances in both the Carabao Cup and the Europa League. His defensive role might largely be due to need, as he has also spent plenty of time as an attacking midfielder for youth sides. Whatever his role going forward, the versatile midfielder appears to have a nice future.
Willock has also been selected for the England U19 squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria to be played November 14th.
Congratulations, Willock. You’re one to watch going forward.
