Arsenal’s Nwakali joins MVV Maastrich on season loan

The Arsenal Youth player is going to have to learn some Dutch.

After what was a rather low-key signing saga in the spring and summer, it appears Kelechi Nwakali won’t be sticking around with the team long. The Nigerian youngster has joined MVV Maastrich on loan for the 2016/17 season. MVV play in the Eerste Divisie, or second tier Dutch football, where hopes are that Nwakali will get plenty of playing time, something less likely in a rather crowded Arsenal Academy.

Maastricht boss Ron Elsen appears happy to have him:

"Kelechi is a multifunctional attacking midfielder with scoring ability and a nose for the final pass. ...[It] is now time for him that he develops through at senior level.

“This is possible by making more playing time in a competition and in competition [is] where it really matters."

After a brilliant U17 World Cup in the fall, where Nwakali was named Player of the Tournament and Nigeria claiming the title, this is an excellent step for the talented midfielder. Arsenal appear to have a working relationship with MVV, having sent fellow youth player Stefan O’Connor on loan earlier.

Looking forward to digging through the websites to learn about both their progress. Good luck.
