Calum Chambers likely heading to Middlesbrough on loan

The deal isn’t yet finalized, but the young defender should get playing time – and that’s good.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal defender Calum Chambers is likely to head on loan to Middlesbrough before the transfer window closes in just a couple of days. The deal is not yet signed, but while personal terms need to be agreed, Sky claim Boro are “favorites” to obtain the player’s services for the season.

We already had a pretty good idea that he was probably on the way out for the year, as Arsène Wenger mentioned his plans last week. It’s probably for the best for all parties, long-term – with Laurent Koscielny, Rob Holding, and soon Shkodran Mustafi, Arsenal have three center backs currently ready and able to play. With Per Mertesacker returning in a few months, that’s four, and there’s not a lot of room in there for Calum. He could possibly get some playing time at right back, but honestly he’s not great there.

Hopefully Boro will give Chambers the playing time he needs to realize the potential he clearly has, one way or the other.
