After dispatching the best that MLS had to offer on Thursday, Arsenal will round out a two-stop California tour by playing one of Liga MX’s most storied franchises, Club Deportivo Guadalajara, on Sunday night in Carson’s StubHub Center.
The Mexican team, better known by its Chivas (goats) nickname, had an offshoot American team called Chivas USA that played in MLS from 2005 to 2014, sharing its Carson home with the LA Galaxy. While Southern California had an odd relationship with the team, and while the franchise did field three of the worst single seasons in MLS history, including a 4-win, 6-draw, 22-loss season right out of the gate, Chivas USA did have some good years, and there are fans aplenty of Mexican Chivas in the region. Do also expect Arsenal to have some fan support, perhaps even more than could fit in the comparatively smaller Avaya Stadium. (StubHub seats 27,000 compared to Avaya’s 18,000.)
As it’s an exhibition, expect lots of rotation in the Arsenal squad; Arsene Wenger deployed 21 different players in the team’s 2-1 win on Thursday night. Chivas is coming off a 4-0 loss to Club Tijuana on Friday night, so expect a number of their starters to get rest.
