Olivier Giroud hasn't had a very pleasant 2016. Since the turn of the year the divisive striker has five goals and four assists in all competitions, but only two of those goals have come in the league as his side has gone from top of the table to fighting for third place. Coupled with the development of Danny Welbeck as a more dynamic option, it's easy to see why some are beginning to view the sexy French forehead as an expendable piece this summer.
Enter Wolfsburg. The German outfit has seen their spot in the table plummet from an impressive second place last season to a disappointing 10th this season thanks to the sale of superstar Kevin De Bruyne. However, it's also the form of their strikers which has disappointed as Bas Dost has been unable to replicate his unsustainable finishing of last season while the likes of Andre Schurrle, Max Kruse and Nicklas Bentdner have been able to add very little themselves. Because of this, rumors of a £120k-a-week contract offer to Giroud have come up by kicker magazine.
Does this rumor mean anything substantial? Probably not. Giroud is under contract for two more seasons and Arsenal is no rush to sell and despite the team's disappointing second half, it's unlikely that a small bump in salary will entice him to move to a 10th place German side, especially when he seems so settled in London.
However, it would be good business for Arsenal to kick the tires on the transfer market just to see if they can get a higher-than-expected transfer fee for him should anyone be interested. Giroud is a talented striker and one that has built up a rapport with this squad, but his struggles and deficiencies are well-documented and it wouldn't hurt to try and find an upgrade given the warchest this club is currently sitting on.
